Itinerary:
Day 1: Kumai – Tanjung Harapan
Upon arrival at Pangkalan Bun Airport, proceed to the arrival hall where a BIH representative will be waiting to transfer you to Kumai to board your klotok boat. Klotok is a traditional wooden riverboat which suits the narrow waterways and is equipped with a roof that forms an upper deck where you can take in the view of the rainforest as you glide by. After a couple of hours of cruising through the Sekonyer River, you will reach Tanjung Harapan. It takes about 30 minutes’ trek from the jetty to the orangutan feeding platform.
The feeding time at Tanjung Harapan camp begins at 15:00 PM. As you continue cruising further into the National Park, you may find a troop of proboscis monkeys sitting on tree branches along the riverbank in the late afternoon. Your Klotok boat will park at a riverbank as the sun fades. Stay overnight on the boat, or alternatively, you may choose the option of spending the night at a lodge by the river at an additional cost.
Day 2: Pondok Taguy – Camp Leakey
Following an early breakfast on board, you will continue your boat trip to Pondok Tangguy, a rehabilitation centre for new ex-captive orangutans. It takes about 30 minutes’ trek from the jetty to the orangutan feeding platform, which starts at 09:00 AM. Next, venture further to Camp Leakey, which was established in 1971 with a mission to rehabilitate and reintroduce elderly ex-captive orangutans to the rainforest. Enjoy a delightful lunch on board before you commence your trek to the feeding platform of Camp Leakey. The trekking time to the feeding platform takes approximately 40 minutes from the jetty and feeding time begins at 14:00.
Kindly note that the orang-utans are known for their high sensitivity towards the presence of humans. For this reason, tourists are only allowed to visit during specific hours and are primarily confined to the feeding stations. While there is no guarantee of spotting orang-utans, visitors have a good chance of witnessing these intelligent creatures as they approach the fruit placed behind the designated area. In addition to the chance of spotting ex-captives orang-utans, you might also encounter wild orang-utans on your trip. As much as you want to see the orang-utans up close, it is crucial to understand regulations and suggested conduct prior to entering their jungle home. After the visit, return to the boat and slowly cruise back to Dumai. You have the option to stay overnight on the boat or at the lodge (subject to an additional cost).
Day 3: Kumai
After breakfast, your boat will continue cruising downstream to Kumai. Upon arrival, your driver will be waiting to transfer you to Pangkalan Bun Airport for your onward flight. Your Borneo Eco Adventure ends here.
